Four years after Returnal showed us that PlayStation exclusives don't always need to be cinematic over the shoulder action adventures, Housemarque are just months away from their next big thing.
At the latest PlayStation Showcase, the studio revealed substantial gameplay details for Saros ahead of its April 30 launch, showcasing a roguelike shooter that builds meaningfully on Returnal's foundation with deeper progression, customisable difficulty, and a corrupting eclipse mechanic that changes the world with every failed run.
World that changes with each failed run
The eclipse is central to everything. Each cycle Arjun pushes through Carcosa adds corruption to the world, visibly transforming biomes and escalating danger. In the Blighted Marsh, eclipse activation brings the water itself alive, burning players on contact.
Enemies fire corrupted yellow projectiles that chip away at maximum armour integrity unless cleansed using power weapons. The world's music distorts alongside its environment, with composer Sam Slater's score warping into layers of drone guitars as corruption deepens. Very cool, stuff.
A new hub space
Between cycles, the Passage serves as Saros' central hub - a Carcosan temple where players upgrade their Enforcer Armor via the Armor Matrix. Using collected Lucenite and Halcyon, players will be able to shape their playstyle through branching upgrades covering armour integrity, resource collection speed, and shield capacity.
Protections reduce challenge - easier reloads, reduced incoming damage - whilst Trials increase it, making hostiles more aggressive or degrading weapon power over time. Crucially, both must remain balanced, preventing players from stacking either extreme.
Reward in death
Death isn't purely punishing either. Weapons found during a run carry over on death, rewarding players who find powerful Soltari or Carcosan weapons mid-cycle. The World Dial also allows direct teleportation to any unlocked biome, making individual runs more flexible.
The Digital Deluxe Edition grants 48-hour early access on April 28, alongside celebration suits themed around Returnal, God of War, and Ghost of Yōtei. Saros launches April 30 exclusively on PlayStation 5.
