The team behind Sony's My Hero Academia mobile game has revealed their next project: an action RPG set in ancient Chinese mythology called GeniGods: Nezha. It's an ambitious pivot for Genigods Lab, a 100-person studio whose previous work has been exclusively mobile titles.
Their Condor Heroes series passed 10 million downloads, and My Hero Academia proved commercially successful, but this is their first premium, pay-upfront console and PC release. The game is set to launch in 2028, which gives them plenty of time, though it's worth noting how far out that date sits.
Interestingly, the game is being developed in collaboration with Sony, meaning no Xbox release, at least not simultaneously with PC and PlayStation 5.
Shadow of the Colossus Meets Chinese Myth
The gameplay footage showcases combat inspired by Bruce Lee's "Be Water" philosophy, with a dual-stance system that switches between ground and aerial fighting. Nezha can condense water into armour-breaking strikes or unleash sweeping attacks for crowd control, emphasising reactive, parry-focused combat with precise timing.
Where things get interesting is the scale. The game features colossal boss battles where you climb directly onto towering gods and traverse their bodies during combat. One sequence involves scaling the Sun Tree with the giant Kuafu to extinguish The Nine Suns, which sounds properly ridiculous in the best way possible. Check out the gallery below for a look at that.
Evolving Through Three Forms
The story spans your transformation from the Spirit Pearl into the first human woman, crafted from water and clay, before your rebirth as Nezha. You're accompanied by the Heart of Sacred Water, a sentient companion from the goddess Nüwa that helps solve puzzles and unlock abilities as you progress.
Legendary figures Yi the sun-feller and Yu the flood-tamer join your journey through ancient Chinese genesis mythology, though how much of their stories factor into gameplay remains unclear from the reveal.
GeniGods: Nezha launches in 2028 on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. The game is now available to wishlist on both platforms.
