Housemarque has announced that Saros has gone gold, meaning development on the game is complete, and it is now ready for release. For the uninitiated, "gone gold" is an industry term that refers to the moment a game's master copy is finalised and sent off for manufacturing and distribution - essentially, it's done, and delays are out of the question, unless you're Cyberpunk 2077.
The announcement was made on 1 April, which prompted Housemarque to tag the post with #notAprilFools, which is fair enough, really.
Saros launches on PS5 on 30 April 2026, with Digital Deluxe Edition owners getting 48-hour early access from 28 April. The game is a PS5 exclusive at launch, though no PC release has been confirmed. It is also enhanced for PS5 Pro with crisper visuals and better performance.
What is Saros??
Saros is the spiritual successor to Returnal Returnal, Housemarque's 2021 third-person shooter that became one of the most critically acclaimed PS5 exclusives of that generation. Like its predecessor, Saros blends bullet hell action with roguelike structure, though this time around the studio has added permanent progression systems that carry over between runs — a direct response to one of the main criticisms of Returnal.
Whether Saros can clear the very high bar set by Returnal remains to be seen, but the early signs are encouraging. If Housemarque has managed to retain what made that game so compelling while fixing its rougher edges, this could well be one of the year's standout titles.
Saros launches on PS5 on 30 April 2026, priced at $70 for the standard edition.
