Arrowhead Game Studios has today released a new update for Helldivers 2, which marks a significant departure from the typical battlefields players have become accustomed to facing in the game so far. Entitled Into the Unjust, the patch introduces a number of key changes that see players descend into subterranean combat missions against the bugs.
Going underground in the latest addition to the title, the developer describes the experience as being a much more oppressive, enclosed, and frantic version of the tactical shooter than players might expect.
The change in setting will introduce a new wave of mission types that revolve around procedurally-generated caves, interactive terrain, and limited visibility, all while having a more narrow selection of Stratagem support to fall back on in the fight against Terminid.
Paired with the change in venue for Helldivers 2‘s intense battles are a handful of new threats in the form of burrowing Terminid variants, and new objectives that players can complete in missions that will test their teamwork and adaptability, as well as their abilities to manage resources in a more careful manner than they have been previously.
Cave Battles and New Missions
Helldivers fans will have to do their trench fighting this weekend. Instead of spreading across the battlefield as is common in the game’s engagements, Helldivers 2‘s Into the Unjust pushes players deep underground, where every inch of the map is covered in new caves, enemies, and hidden dangers.
Flashlights are key to survival in the underground caves, and unlike above ground terrain, players will find themselves in environments that allow squads to dig in and alter the landscape.
Supply drops and even calling in Stratagem are limited, and squads must plan to use a support beacon and reveal an open space to safely access them. In addition to a change of scenery, Into the Unjust introduces two new mission types.
In the first, squads must venture into the underground to search for and eliminate a large Spore Lung. The second sees players piloting a GATER vehicle to transport a large oil barrel, forcing them to battle wave after wave of Terminids before extraction is possible. In both cases, these new missions will truly test squad coordination and awareness to the limit.
Fresh Enemy Threats
Terminid life is not left unchanged either. Rupture Spewers and Warriors are now given the ability to burrow underground. This new evolution will allow the hordes to dig in and hide out, popping back up for attacks when a squad least expects it. Furthermore, another new airborne enemy, the Dragonroach, has been released into the wild.
The Dragonroach will soar above battlefields, raining acid down on players and preventing them from ever feeling truly secure, even when they hold the high ground.
What’s Next
Into the Unjust has arrived, but players can look forward to more content very soon. On September 4th, the Dust Devils Premium Warbond will be available to help players dig into the new update with even more weapons and armor to help them further take up the war effort.
With Into the Unjust, Helldivers are finding themselves in some new territory, but the mission is the same as ever: spread democracy, by any means necessary.
