In a special livestream today, Arrowhead announced that their co-op shooter Helldivers 2 is dropping on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025.

Arrowhead Game Studios has officially announced that Helldivers 2, one of this year’s biggest surprise hits, is launching on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025. The game is available for pre-order on the Xbox Store right now for the price of $39.99.

Originally a PlayStation and PC exclusive, this move marks a major shift in Sony’s approach to its first-party games and signals a broader strategy of reaching new audiences beyond the PlayStation ecosystem.

Helldivers 2 launched earlier this year to strong critical acclaim and an enthusiastic player base on PlayStation 5 and PC. The game quickly became known for its chaotic, cooperative third-person combat, dynamic missions, and tongue-in-cheek sci-fi humour. It rapidly grew into a rare live service success story for PlayStation, attracting millions of players around the world.

Now, with its upcoming arrival on Xbox, Helldivers 2 is set to expand its player base even further as Xbox players will finally have the chance to join the intergalactic fight and test their shooting skills, which they probably have a lot of thanks to Halo and Gears.

A big moment for Sony’s strategy

For many fans, this announcement is more than just another port - it serves as a glimpse into Sony’s evolving business strategy. Historically, Sony has kept its biggest titles exclusive to PlayStation consoles to drive hardware sales and strengthen brand loyalty. However, in recent years, we’ve seen Sony experiment more with PC releases (such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, Spider-Man and God of War), and now, it seems they’re ready to go a step further by embracing Xbox as well.

By bringing Helldivers 2 to Xbox, Sony is effectively acknowledging the value of cross-platform ecosystems and live service growth. In an era where engagement and recurring revenue have become critical, expanding to new platforms can certainly breathe new life into a game’s community and extend its lifespan, which is what Arrowhead are probably aiming for before starting work on Helldivers 3.

Shocking? Are we seeing a major shift in Sony's exclusives strategy or Helldivers 2 is just one of those games that really benefits from more players?

This move also highlights the importance of live service games in Sony’s long-term plans, despite some recent failures like Concord, and cancelled games like The Last of Us multiplayer project, Twisted Metal and Deviation's unannounced title.

Helldivers 2 has already shown strong player retention thanks to frequent updates and an active roadmap. By opening the gates to Xbox players, the game will likely see a surge in active squads and increased spending on in-game content, all of which supports Sony’s goal of diversifying revenue streams beyond just console sales.

What Xbox players can expect

Xbox Series X|S players will be able to jump into Helldivers 2’s full experience on August 26. The game will support cross-play across all platforms (PS5, PC, Xbox Series X|S).

The game's arrival on Xbox also means more soldiers on the battlefield, potentially leading to even bigger community-driven events and more ambitious post-launch content in the future.
