Google came up with news that surprised no one with a twist that surprised just about everyone.

Google Stadia has had a rough run from the very beginning as a platform and it never managed to blossom into what it could be as it never attracted enough customers.

The parent company, Google, kept reassuring the public the platform is doing just fine all the way up until the very end when they said it was actually going to be shut down in a few months.

With the latest announcement, they confirmed Stadia is going to be shut down on January 18, 2022 , which is two and a half months away from the announcement itself.

Slightly shorter than that period, however, is the interval between the previous announcement that Stadia is not shutting down and the news it really is, which will undoubtedly cause a lot of damage when it comes to consumer trust.

CD Projekt Red Cyberpunk 2077 Cyberpunk 2077 listed Stadia as a platform not too long ago

Thankfully, the games and DLC purchased through the store will be refunded to the Stadia users but the time invested into games without cross-progression can never be recovered.

In the end, the news of Stadia shutting down didn't surprise many people as the public could see this coming from a long time ago but in the end, Google did manage to surprise everyone by announcing refunds for almost everything except the services rendered. Yes, that means the subscription payments will not be refunded as services were provided for the time period the users paid for.

As for the Stadia personnel, it appears they were also in the dark and were briefed on the shutdown just a few hours before the announcement.
