Fallout 4 gets a new patch

Bethesda has released a new Fallout 4 patch focused on stability, UI fixes, and Steam Deck improvements, arriving alongside the Fallout Season 2 premiere.

Fallout 4 is finally getting a brand-new patch from Bethesda, over a decade after the RPG’s original release. This isn’t some bombastic content drop or surprise expansion, however.

Instead, Bethesda’s December update addresses the “unsung hero” side of things: stability, usability, and platform-specific improvements. The changes are “subtle” for players still wandering the Commonwealth in 2025, particularly on PC or Steam Deck, but are significant quality-of-life improvements nonetheless.

Save, load, and creation club fixes

One of the larger portions of the update details how Fallout 4 manages saves and Creation Club content. The changelog especially emphasizes this for Steam users.

  • Fixed issues where the Creations Bundle add-on failed to appear on Steam
  • Older save files now correctly recognise installed Creation Club content
  • Warning messages now display properly when Creations are disabled but not deleted

Should hopefully minimize some misunderstandings when loading old saves, and help avoid some missing content after updates.

UI and usability improvements

Bethesda has also implemented a whole host of UI and UX improvements intended to make navigation easier across the board, including on handheld PCs.

  • Improved visibility and interaction in the Category List
  • Fixed overlapping UI elements and missing button prompts
  • Restored the Best Results sort option
  • Resolved issues with keyboard input loss and cursor visibility
  • Fixed navigation problems when quickly re-entering the Creations Store

The update also streamlines management of installed Creations, such as with the ability to delete removed items individually from the load order.

Crashes, stability, and performance fixes

Stability improvements:

  • Fixed crashes linked to downloading Creations, idling in menus, and profile sign-outs
  • Addressed rare crashes after store purchases and during new game setups
  • Improved error handling for rapid menu actions
  • Ensured the game no longer hangs when quitting

Steam Deck and ultrawide support

If you’re playing on a modern system, you should notice some improvements here and there.

  • The Workshop menus are no longer distorted on ultrawide and super-ultrawide monitors
  • Eliminated some stutter and UI misalignment
  • The button prompts and their placement are improved on Steam Deck and similar handheld devices

Localisation and text fixes

A couple smaller, but still very welcome fixes round out the update.

  • Characters like apostrophes and accents are no longer appearing as boxes
  • The Anniversary Upgrade prompts are properly sized on German, French, and Spanish language game

Fallout 4 is now over 10 years old, but this patch demonstrates Bethesda is still working on keeping it playable on modern hardware. It’s not a massive update, but for returning players it’s a welcome bit of polish right when they need it.
