Bethesda is preparing to reveal a substantial Starfield update very soon, but Todd Howard wants everyone to understand what it is and isn't. Speaking with Kinda Funny's Greg Miller, Howard confirmed the studio has been working on "a lot of Starfield content" and will be talking about it "really soon."
Ambitious but not a "2.0" update
Howard described "updates and things that change the game, not in an isolated way, but sort of meta, using outer space and things in ways that we haven't." He also mentioned improvements to the procedural generation side, though clarified this won't fundamentally alter the nature of exploration.
However, Howard was equally clear about managing expectations. "If Starfield is something that didn't connect with you right away, or you bounced off it, or found it boring in places, I don't think this is going to change that fundamentally," he stated bluntly. The update is designed for players who already love Starfield rather than a reboot aimed at winning back critics. So yeah, you can throw those Cyberpunk 2.0 comparions out the window.
More Starfield content coming beyond the major update
Bethesda's long-term Starfield plans remain intact. Howard confirmed more content beyond this update, with the Creations program continuing to deliver community-made additions. He also hinted at platform-related storage limitations currently being negotiated - potentially with PlayStation - that have delayed certain larger-scale Creator content.
Starfield remains a "Game Pass hours beast" according to Howard, with a substantial active audience despite mixed critical reception. The update represents Bethesda's attempt to deepen that existing engagement rather than pivot the entire experience.
When pressed for a timeframe, Howard simply said "soonish," suggesting an announcement within weeks rather than months.
