Bethesda is reportedly developing Starfield's largest content update yet for 2026, which will significantly reduce loading screens and improve exploration according to a report from Windows Central.

According to a report from Windows Central, Bethesda is working on a major Starfield update scheduled for 2026 that will address two of the space RPG's most criticised aspects: excessive loading screens and repetitive planetary exploration. Judging by the rumours, the update will be the biggest post-launch addition to the game and includes substantial technical improvements to the Creation Engine to make the new features possible.

The most significant change will transform Starfield's space travel systems, which currently rely heavily on loading screens between planets, space stations, and planetary surfaces. The report suggests space flight will become more free-form and continuous, with various systems pertaining to exploration receiving substantial improvements.

"As rumored, it seems that Starfield will break free of its loading-screen heavy space flight systems," Windows Central reports. "Space flight will now feel more free-form and continuous if the rumors are accurate, and various other systems pertaining to space travel and exploration will be improved as well."

The update will also tackle another frequent complaint: the lack of variety in Points of Interest across planets. Players consistently reported encountering identical structures and layouts during exploration, significantly diminishing the sense of discovery in Starfield's vast procedurally generated universe. The 2026 update aims to address this repetition with more diverse planetary content.

Starfield is a stunning sci-fi game but one that suffers from many issues, that could be fixed in the rumoured 2026 update

According to the report, Bethesda has implemented large technical improvements to the Creation Engine to facilitate these changes. Crucially, these enhancements will carry forward to future Bethesda games, suggesting long-term benefits for The Elder Scrolls VI and the next Fallout game.

The news also indicates Bethesda remains committed to supporting Starfield despite mixed reception at launch. While the game received generally positive reviews, criticism focused on its disjointed exploration systems and technical limitations that broke immersion. Loading screens when entering ships, landing on planets, and transitioning between areas became a persistent frustration for players expecting seamless exploration.

If the reported changes prove accurate, the 2026 update could fundamentally reshape Starfield's core experience, potentially addressing many criticisms that prevented the game from matching Bethesda's previous classics like Skyrim and Fallout. However, Bethesda has not officially confirmed these details.
