Dambuster Studios' strategic report confirms Dead Island 3 is now the primary focus for all developers

Dambuster Studios has confirmed Dead Island 3 is in early production, according to the company's latest financial report, with a predicted release window of Q1/Q2 2028 for the zombie survival sequel.

Dambuster Studios has officially confirmed that Dead Island 3 is in early production, with the zombie survival sequel targeting a Q1/Q2 2028 release window. The announcement comes via the Nottingham-based developer's strategic report for the year ended March 2025 (Thanks, Timur222).

The report reveals that following the release of Dead Island 2 Ultimate Edition in October 2024, the entire studio has shifted focus to the third instalment. All 194 employees are now assigned to the project, with 93% working directly in development roles while the remaining staff handle studio management and administrative support.

Parts of Dead Island 3 are already in early production, with feature, character, world, and story design progressing at a pace. Once the Luna and Mac versions of Dead Island 2 are complete, Dambuster's entire QA team will also transition to testing the sequel.

The decision to greenlight a third entry suggests Dead Island 2 performed well commercially, though specific sales figures weren't disclosed in the report. The second game spent nearly a decade in development hell across multiple studios before Dambuster took over and successfully delivered the project.

Dead Island 2 earned recognition for its brutally realistic zombie design and visceral melee combat system. The game allowed players to dismember zombies with grotesque detail, featuring some of the most photorealistic rotting flesh effects seen in gaming. The series has built its reputation on this over-the-top gore and satisfying first-person melee combat.

Dambuster Studios reported a profit before tax of £370,686 for the year ended March 2025, down from £702,988 the previous year. The company's net assets stood at £2,399,985. With a three-year development runway ahead, fans of the franchise will need to wait until 2028 to return to the zombie-infested paradise.
