There was a time when the Battlefield franchise was once the multiplayer shooter everyone was raving about. This large-scale military shooter was neck and neck with Call of Duty in terms of popularity but somehow, EA have managed to mess up their golden goose.
It all started to fall apart when the company decided to follow trends and introduce the live service model to the game with Battlefield 5 and since then, the series never really reached the height it had during Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 days.
EA promised a lot for every Battlefield title in recent years but failed to deliver, especially with the most recent Battlefield 2042, which failed spectacularly on launch, albeit it's in a better state now after years of content updates and polish.
It's no secret that EA are working on a brand new Battlefield game, which was confirmed by the company at their recent earnings call. EA did not talk much about the game but did throw a couple of marketing buzzwords at shareholders, stating that the next game will be a "tremendous live service".
EA CEO Andrew Wilson added that he has been playing the game with the development team as they work hard to bring the title closer to the release window, which is yet to be announced. Fans of the franchise are obviously disappointed that EA decided to start talking about Battlefield in such way, stating that the game is already showing red flags, even though it's not even revealed yet.
Obviously, live service games can be great if done right. Take a look at Helldivers 2 for example, but given EA and DICE's history with this model, it's easy to see why the fans are worried that the next Battlefield game will be another disappointment.
The next Battlefield game could be released sometime in late 2024 but there is no official confirmation on the release date. The game should be coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox SEries X|S.
