Electronic Arts recently announced Battlefield Labs, a new community-facing initiative that will allow community contribution in defining the future of the franchise.

Players will have an opportunity to pilot new gameplay concepts and features and pass feedback, whose impact can make a real difference in shaping Battlefield’s development. Under the care of Battlefield Studios, including DICE, EA Motive, Ripple and Criterion, this new campaign will allow for an active contribution in defining the future of the series.

Sign-ups for testing at Battlefield Labs have gone live, and testers will have a chance to try out a variety of features. Much of the content, however, will not yet have been developed. Players, according to EA, will have access to a variety of sections of the game under NDA, with feedback to then make its way into the completed article.

What to expect during testing

Meanwhile, the new title in the Battlefield series is in pre-alpha, and at the end of the reveal trailer for Battlefield Labs, EA took a quick glimpse at its gameplay.

Community feedback, even with the developers having played it in-house, will become significant in its development, according to them.

The initial testing will include testing fighting and demolition core, and then testing for gadgets, weapons, and vehicles. Several types of games, including Conquest and Breakthrough, will be supported for testing.

Not only will testing modify present mechanics, but new ones will even be tested, and strategic ones such as the Class system will receive a boost.

Battlefield Labs will begin with a small cohort, beginning with a few thousand in North America and an equivalent cohort in Europe, but in the long run, its availability will expand to tens of thousands in other regions.

Even if no one is invited, everyone in the community will have a voice in it. Developers will post regularly, including work in-progress shots and community feedback discussion threads.

First look at next Battlefield

Although details about the upcoming Battlefield title are still scarce, a short pre-alpha gameplay snippet was included in the Battlefield Labs trailer.

The footage revealed a modern, realistic aesthetic reminiscent of Battlefield 3, featuring desert environments and partially destructible buildings - a change from previous games that allowed for full-scale destruction.

As for a launch date, a rumour circulating puts the next Battlefield title in a launch window for October 2025. EA pledged to have more testing and discussion for its fans in store for them before launch, so additional information will surely follow in the near future.
