According to recent comments from a Speedhunters contributor, Electronic Arts has reportedly decided to "shelve" the Need for Speed series for now. While EA hasn’t officially confirmed this move, the suggestion points to the franchise being put on pause, with no immediate plans for new games in the near future.
The update came to light when a Speedhunters author shared that the website, known for its deep dives into global car culture, was also going on ice due to this decision. Speedhunters was funded and supported by EA, tying its operations directly to the Need for Speed brand.
What does this mean for Speedhunters?
For those unfamiliar, Speedhunters is an international collective of photographers, writers, and drivers passionate about exploring and celebrating car culture worldwide. Launched in 2008, it quickly became a staple in the automotive community, thanks to its in-depth features, stunning photography, and behind-the-scenes looks at motorsport and tuning scenes around the globe.
The site's future now appears uncertain, as the loss of funding from EA's Need for Speed division effectively puts it on pause.
Is this the end of Need for Speed?
While "shelved" might sound final, it doesn't necessarily mean Need for Speed is gone forever. EA has previously stated it intends to revisit some of its franchises, leaving the door open for a possible revival. However, if the rumours are indeed true, fans shouldn’t expect a new instalment anytime soon.
A blow to car culture gaming
If the rumours hold true, putting Need for Speed on hold marks a major moment in the racing game world. One of the longest-running and most iconic arcade racing series, Need for Speed, helped define street racing culture in gaming for nearly three decades.
The last mainline entry, Need for Speed Unbound, launched in 2022 to generally positive reviews but didn't appear to ignite the same widespread excitement as earlier titles like Underground or Most Wanted.
