Rumours about the next Need for Speed game have been swirling around recently, stating that the game is current-gen only and will be launched in 2022.
EA are yet to officially announce the next Need for Speed and quite frankly, if this game is indeed coming this year, they are running out of time to do proper reveal and marketing.
Until we get the official reveal, we have some leaks that show us the first footage of the game. A short gameplay clip was shared on Reddit and it shows a Bel Air car with wings, crashing in some kind of structure, confirming the earlier rumours that Need for Speed will have anime/cartoon elements for wind, drifting, breaking and other VFX.
Here are some shots from the clip:
The first screenshot confirms that cars will have cartoon visual effects when jumping over obstacles. In this scenario, the car gets cartoon wings.
The second screenshot shows the effect that occurs when the car hits an obstacle. You can see that the screen glitches, creating a pretty cool effect but will hardcore Need for Speed fans actually like this?
Some fans on the Need for Speed subreddit are already in disbelief, stating that they didn't have any expectations but are still disappointed to see Need for Speed franchise going in such a direction.
However, we suggest you take the leaked footage with a grain of salt since it's entirely possible that this is an early build of the game and that the anime-style VFX never made it to the actual game that we will get to play soon.
Yes, the footage looks very real and in line what reliable insiders reported before but until the official announcement, don't take anything as a certainty.
The next Need for Speed game is expected to launch in late 2022 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
