Following the announcement of Counter-Strike 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has reached a new record for the most active players, surpassing the previous record by 100,000.
According to independent Steam tracker SteamDB, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive reached the biggest number of concurrent players, reaching a peak of an incredible 1,519,457 players who were actively playing this game at the same time, surpassing the previous record by 100,000. Interestingly, the second most active game on Steam this week was DOTA , which had three times fewer active players than the leading CS:GO, a total of 667,348; the difference between first and second place is rarely so large.
The announcement of Counter-Strike 2 is, without a doubt, mainly responsible for the increase in the number of active players in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Valve announced earlier this week the next instalment of the popular FPS competitive multiplayer, which we can expect to be released sometime during the summer.
Counter-Strike 2 will be, as Valve claims, a free upgrade to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and will allow the players to bring their progress and inventory items from the previous game. Perhaps one of the reasons for the increased interest in the game is that players want to be as prepared as possible for the upcoming update.
According to Valve, the game will be "cleaner, brighter, and more visually appealing." Counter-Strike 2 maps are being upgraded and overhauled to take advantage of all of the new Source 2 tools and rendering features.
"Counter-Strike 2 sounds have been reworked to better reflect the physical environment, to be more distinct, and to express more game state," the company said. "They've also been rebalanced for a better listening experience."
