Even though they said at the time that they'll be working with Dutch authorities to find a convenient solution, Valve was ultimately forced to re-enable Steam trading for Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 without loot boxes.
The news came way of Counter Strike's official blog, whose Misc section contains updated information for users in Netherlands and Belgium. The post says that Steam Trading and Steam Market features have been re-enabled in the countries, although their citizens "will be restricted from opening containers."
In case you haven't been following the loot box witch hunt in its entirety, the whole drama can be traced back to Star Wars: Battlefront II and EA's ingenious pay-to-play solution, which had way more pay than play. Ironically enough, the resulting public backlash caused the dev to remove them, which actually cleared Battlefront II from charges in Netherlands.
At the beginning of 2018, , and seemed to spearhead the hunt but results never materialised. Sweden's laws on the matter are still being drafted apparently and won't be in before 2019, while Hawaii and the Land of the Free quickly folded, most likely thanks to lobbying an other economy related pressures.
Interestingly enough, and were among the last countries to raise the issue, and raise it they did, putting their foot down as soon they found out who, what and where. Choosing to err on the side of vulnerable populations, both countries skipped the wishy-washy rhetoric and rose-tinted glasses and proceeded to enforce the law.
Both countries stressed that not complying with the law means fines and possibly even prison sentences, which are doubled if the population in risk turn out to be children. As you can see, Ruud Van Nistelrooy immediately agreed and put his hands up in the air, overjoyed with the decision.
Jokes aside, I happen to have very little love for loot boxes, even less so when people compare them to sticker packs of old. I mean, should the fact that predatory gambling was once unregulated be used as justification for perpetuating it to a whole 'nother level? Seriously, can someone not what decent treatment of players gets you?
