Remedy Entertainment finally pulled back the curtain on Control Resonant at PlayStation State of Play, and if the first gameplay footage is anything to go by, the studio isn't playing it safe.
The sequel looks like a substantial leap from the original - chaotic, spectacular, and dripping with the kind of supernatural mayhem that hasn't been seen since Activision's Prototype. (I hope I'm not the only one who sees a clear resemblance.)
The footage shows protagonist Dylan Faden hurling enemies through the air, smashing them mid-flight, and navigating zones where gravity simply stops working as intended. These Gravity Anomalies flip orientation entirely, opening up combat encounters and traversal in ways the first Control never attempted.
Manhattan itself is being reshaped by an invading cosmic force, creating large, distinct zones packed with side activities, hidden encounters, and optional discoveries. This is another clear step up from the first game, which had smaller, linear levels.
Central to combat is the Aberrant, a shapeshifting melee weapon that transforms into multiple forms, providing a versatile toolkit that evolves throughout the game. Dylan also faces Resonants - corrupted remnants of powerful individuals twisted by the same mysterious force threatening reality. Defeating these boss encounters unlocks brand-new abilities, creating meaningful progression tied directly to the game's most challenging fights.
The jump in ambition mirrors what Remedy achieved moving from Alan Wake to Alan Wake 2 - taking a beloved but niche original and expanding its vision dramatically. Control Resonant appears to be making a similar statement, with production values and gameplay scope that suggest genuine confidence.
Control Resonant launches in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, and Mac. Remedy Entertainment is self-publishing, with Annapurna Pictures co-financing the project.
With everything I've seen so far, Control Resonant is high on my list of most anticipated games of 2026.
