News has officially been confirmed on John Wick getting its own game. Saber Interactive showcased the game earlier today, stating that John Wick will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Details on when exactly John Wick will release are unknown, however we do know that this isn’t a mini spin-off game. The studio took to sharing that they are working closely with Lionsgate and director Chad Stahelski.
The game takes place within the John Wick universe, and according to developers, will take place earlier on in John’s timeline than fans have previously seen.
Story Set Before Impossible Task
Insider sources at Saber Interactive have stated that the untitled John Wick game will have an original story set years before John Wick. Since this places John’s tale before the Impossible Task from the first film, we can assume players will see how he became the deadly assassin the world fears.
Fans can expect to see both returning characters from the movies and new faces that were created for the game’s story. Setting the game before the films even happened allows the developers to expand on the lore without having to deviate from canon.
Essentially, this indicates the game can exist on its own without you needing to know every intricacy of the films.
Gameplay Inspired by Movies
Saber Interactive went on to list some pillars of gameplay they hope to include that players enjoyed from the movies:
- A gun-fu based combat system centered around close quarter gunplay
- Cinematic camera angles inspired by fight choreography
- Drivesters
- Various locales that don’t feel gratuitous
Essentially, the developer wants you to feel like you are playing as John Wick and not a character borrowing from him.
