Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 launched unannounced on PS4 and PS5 earlier this month. Today, Activision confirmed one piece of functionality: cross-gen multiplayer between PS4 and PS5.
Players on next-gen consoles and PS4 can play online with each other, despite few upgrades being brought to the games on PS5.
PS4 and PS5 Players Can Match Together
Call of Duty Updates, the game’s official Twitter account, revealed multiplayer matchmaking capabilities between both consoles, but with caveats.
- You can't play with PS3 players
- You can't use cross-platform play with Xbox, PC
Thankfully, cross-gen support is only between PS4 and PS5, so everyone on PlayStation stays together. Players who own the Season Pass also won’t be separated from players who don’t.
Owners of the Season Pass will be able to matchmake with players who only bought the base game, preventing fractured multiplayer lobbies that plagued previous Call of Duty games.
Pricing Increases Coming Soon
PlayStation’s trio of re-releases are selling for cheaper right now for PlayStation Plus members, but won’t for much longer.
Present prices:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 – $19.99 | PS Plus
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 – $19.99 | PS Plus
- Season Pass (both games) – $9.89
Starting August 6, prices will jump to:
- $39.99 per game
- $19.99 per Season Pass
While fans have lamented the lack of any visual enhancements like higher resolution options, field-of-view sliders, or other minor quality-of-life upgrades, at least players will be able to enjoy cross-gen multiplayer with PS4 and PS5. This should help ensure there’s a consistent online community for both retro CoDs.
