Today, 11 Bit Studios are refreshing their award-winning and chilly city-builder Frostpunk with the new expansion called The Rifts, and as the name suggests, it lets you build a sprawling city using the game's new gameplay mechanic.
Granted, we can't say we've exactly danced through Frostpunk's campaign, so we can't say we're overly keen on getting slaughtered by the game's expansion, but we're sure many more experienced players have been waiting for exactly that.
Note that Frostpunk's Season Pass already contains The Rifts, so if go for that, you'll soon be knee deep into some fresh in-game content while reserving the upcoming expansions. Alternatively, it can be purchased for $4.99, with the European and UK alternatives hanging closely around that mark.
"Experience new level of challenge on a brand new Endless Mode map, where the land itself threatens your survival. Using a new gameplay mechanic, bridge the rifts to access new areas. Expand the city to save your people from inevitable doom", 11 Bit Studios wrote on their Steam page.
What the trailer makes pretty clear is that Endless Mode map is definitely not endless, at least not if you're thinking along the lines of unlimited real estate, which the name might suggest.
In fact, you'll be quite limited as to how to grow your Frostpunk city, but you'll be able to expand it via rifts, i.e. bridges. Seeing as how your urbanistic masterpiece will be spread across multiple rocky platforms, they'll definitely come in handy.
Of course, being spread across multiple platforms means that keeping the heat up will be a complicated task, requiring some high-level planning, which is after all a huge part of Frostpunk's deceptively simple gameplay mechanic.

If you went for Frostpunk's Season Pass, The Rifts is the first of three expansions you can look forward too, and the next one arrives later this year. Dubbed The Last Autumn, it's set to add new gameplay mechanics and architecture, while the last one is a bit of a mistery.
Namely, Project TVADGYCGJR expansion's description is expected when The Last Autumn launches, as "the scouts of New London are currently in search of the intel about the forthcoming expansion."
