Subnautica 2 tracks three gauges from the moment you start playing: hunger, thirst, and health. Your lifepod provides a small supply of nutrition blocks, water, and medkits to get you started, but these run out quickly and are not a sustainable source of nourishment on a hostile alien planet. The fix is available almost immediately, tied to the very first objective the game gives you.
Following Anita's signal will lead you to a large alien plant on the seabed, with Anita's blackbox sitting directly beneath it. The blackbox is what the objective points you toward, and it is easy to interact with it and move on without noticing that the plant itself is also interactable. Do not make that mistake.
Step 1: Follow Anita's signal to the large alien plant
Swim towards the Anita signal marker. You are looking for a large creature or plant with wide, green, wing-like fronds and a glowing purple centre. Anita's blackbox is at its base.
Step 2: Interact with the purple flower
Instead of heading straight to the blackbox, swim up to the purple flower at the centre of the plant and interact with it. Your character will reach their hands into it. This triggers the Digestion adaptation, which allows you to safely eat local flora and fauna without harming your health.
Step 3: Check your Adaptations screen
Open your menu and navigate to the Adaptations tab to confirm the upgrade has registered. Digestion will appear alongside Pressure Tolerance, the other starting adaptation, on the right side of the screen (you get this one as part of the tutorial). From this point, local plants and creatures become a viable and renewable food and water source.
Quick tip: Once you have the Digestion adaptation, start picking up any edible flora you pass on your way between objectives. Running your hunger and thirst gauges down to zero carries health penalties, and having a few local food items in your inventory at all times means you never need to rely on your limited starting rations again.
