Riven, a puzzle-solving adventure from Cyan Worlds, is a game whose puzzle design will amaze you and, at the same time, frustrate you beyond words. These puzzles can be very difficult, especially because the game doesn't give you a single hint on how to solve them.
As soon as you start the game and a mysterious character saves you from your imprisonment, the first puzzle will kick in—you'll have to enter a golden dome from a rotating room, and all your effort might seem useless because the solution will be very well-hidden to you.
If you're having trouble solving this puzzle, we have a guide that will lead you step-by-step towards its solution.
How to solve a rotating room puzzle in Riven
From the moment you gain control over your character, turn left and follow the path upstairs. You'll come to a fork where you can take a path over a drawbridge, go downstairs, or enter the room on your left—directly opposite from a drawbridge. Enter the room on the left and notice four golden bugs on the walls. If you want, you can peek inside the bugs to see the history of the place, drawn in paintings. Interact with small golden buttons beneath bugs to open them. If you choose to explore each painting, it will unlock the "Visual History" achievement.
To solve this puzzle, you must exit this room, and at the very entrance, look slightly to the right. You'll notice a small button you can press. Pressing this button will rotate the room. Press it twice, exit the room, and take a path that leads downstairs to the left when you exit the room.
There, you'll notice a locked gate, but this gate can be unlocked if you're looking hard enough. On the right side of the gate is a loose hinge. Interact with it, take it out, and open the gate—now you have an alternate way to enter the rotating room. Now, when you enter the room from this side, a path to some pipes will be opened; if not, return to the previous button and rotate it once it is revealed.
Interact with a valve on a pipe to let the steam through—you'll need it later. Now, look to the right of the entrance, and you'll notice one more rotating switch and, on the left side, a small lever. Pull the lever; it will open the previously closed gate that denied you access to the rotating dome. Once you gain access to this dome, on its entrance will be the same button and the same lever. Repeat the process, and soon the entrance to the golden dome will be revealed. Once you enter it, you'll get the "Monument to Hubris" achievement.
