Nioh 3: Summoning Explained

Summons are a major part of almost every Souls-like out there, and Nioh 3 isn't an exception. In this guide, we will explain everything regarding summoning.

Almost every Souls-like game has some sort of summoning mechanic. Some games use AI summons, while the others use real-life players for help against tougher enemies. Nioh 3, the newest action RPG from Team Ninja, offers sort of both.

Unlike the other Souls-likes, Nioh 3 allows you to summon help not just during boss fights, but also while exploring the world.

If those summoning mechanics are in any way confusing to you, and you don't know how to properly summon help, in this guide, we will explain everything related to the summoning mechanics.

How to summon help in Nioh 3

In Nioh 3, you'll be able to summon help from the real players, or more precisely, the real player characters. While exploring the world, you'll come across blue wisps (see the image below), and if you approach those wisps, you'll see they're called Benevolent Graves.

Those graves will let you summon help from the other people's characters, but only if those players left those characters for the others to be of help to them. To leave your character to help others, you'll need to own a special item called Righteous Jasper. Select this item from the inventory and place it in the world wherever you want; if someone decides to summon your character, you'll be rewarded with a random item once they do.

Righteous Jaspers can be found while exploring or can be crafted by the blacksmith inside Eternal Rift.

However, summoning in Nioh 3 isn't for free, meaning you'll need special items to summon help. Those items are called Ochoco Cups, and every summoning will require a specific number of them. Early game summons with lower levels will usually require fewer Ochoco Cups, while the summons with higher levels will require more Cups, but usually no more than five.

Ochoco Cups

Ochoco Cups can be gathered from loot points and chests but are very rare items. However, there is an efficient way of gathering Ochoco Cups, and it is by defeating players from Bloody Graves (see the image below). Bloody Graves will appear in the place where a real player died, and if you decide to awaken them, you'll be able to fight them.

Fighting and winning against those characters will grant you some nice loot and usually a few Ochoco Cups. If you're in need of a few Ochoco Cups to summon help, Bloody Graves are the best place to look. Be aware, however, that those fights can be extremely tough, especially if the character's level you're fighting is higher than yours.

Summoning Co-op help

Apart from AI summoning, you'll be able to play Nioh 3 in co-op as well. To enter the co-op section, you'll need to pray at a shrine during a mission and choose the 'Co-op' menu. Inside this menu, you'll be able to summon visitors, become a visitor, or do expeditions.

Summoning a visitor will allow you to summon real players who have already finished that mission or beat a particular boss. Becoming a visitor will allow you to offer your help to someone else, while doing expeditions will let you explore the world and do missions with another player in co-op.

Summoning a co-op friend will require Ochoco Cups as well. You'll offer one Ochoco Cup per player, and if they join you, you'll be charged, but if they don't, the Ochoco Cup will be returned back to your inventory.
