One of the features Team Ninja is always including in their RPGs is the rarity system and classification of pieces of equipment, not just by quality level, but by rarity as well, meaning the rarer the equipment piece, the better.
The rarity system here is not just for cosmetic purposes; the equipment with higher rarity is actually the better equipment because with rarity level, some very important bonuses unlock.
If you're stuck with this rarity thing in Nioh 3 and don't know which piece of gear to equip and use, we've prepared a guide that will explain everything regarding this at first very complicated but ultimately very simple mechanic.
Rarity Colours Explained
Nioh 3 is a game with no shortage of equipment; on every occasion, the game will flood you with different pieces of armour and weapons, all with different stats and rarity, and you'll probably get lost in all that shiny chaos.
Once you open the 'Items' tab in the main menu or try to change the equipment in the 'Equipment' menu, you'll see a lot of different items with different colours, so which one to choose?
The answer is quite simple: aim for the purple equipment because those are the rarest items in the game with the best stats. If inside the 'Equipment' menu, while highlighting one of the items, you press the touchpad button (PS5 controller), you'll get the information about certain items.
Navigate to the item in question, and the game will explain to you the item rarity colours. Each item showcased in the white is a common item, and those are the items of the lowest quality. The next in line are the yellow ones labelled as uncommon, then the blue ones are rare, and finally, the purple ones are exotic.
The rarity rating goes like this:
- White - Common
- Yellow - Uncommon
- Blue - Rare
- Purple - Exotic
Other Classifications
Apart from rarity, the items in Nioh 3 differ by level, value, and attack/defence stats. The attack stats are tied to weapons, and the defence stats are tied to armour. The higher those stats are, the better equipment will perform in action; however, you'll usually be split between the higher rarity or higher attack/defence stats.
This puzzle can be solved very easily, though. You should choose the rarer equipment and go to the blacksmith in the Eternal Rift to upgrade it to a higher level. Sticking to one equipment set is not recommended, though, because, obviously, this game has so many pieces of equipment that it forces you all the time to try something new.
If you don't want to bother to try different combinations yourself, Nioh 3 has got you covered there. Simply choose the style you want (Samurai/Ninja) inside the 'Equipment' menu, press the R3 button, and choose the agility level you prefer. This option will allow the game to choose the best pieces of equipment you currently have, and you won't have to search through countless pieces of weapons and armour yourself.
