Nioh 3: Samurai vs. Ninja

In Nioh 3, you'll be able to play either as a samurai or as a ninja, with each style having its ups and downs. In this guide, we will explain to you what the benefits are of playing as the one or the other.

Nioh games were always known for their overwhelming complexity, which didn't sit well with all players, and exactly because of that, many players avoided playing those games.

However, the latest instalment of this action RPG series from Team Ninja, Nioh 3, simplified things for a bit, and also it is still quite an overwhelming game with too many things a casual player can digest; some mechanics seem much more comprehensible than before.

One of the new mechanics introduced in this latest instalment is the ability to choose between two playstyles, where you're allowed to play as a samurai or as a ninja. In this guide, we will try to explain the differences between those two styles and when to use one and when the other.

Samurai Style

The samurai style is a more robust and strong style where the power and strength of a samurai come forth. When it comes to core gameplay, both styles are pretty much the same. You'll be able to use pretty much everything in both styles, but some differences are present between them.

  • As a samurai, you'll be able to wield bigger weapons

Weapons wielded by the samurai are bigger and stronger. You'll be able to use huge hammers, odachis (colossal swords), switchglaives, and many other weapons that look intimidating and deal very big damage.

  • The attacks deal more damage, but use more Ki (stamina) as well

The attacks of a samurai are slow but powerful, especially if you wield big weapons like odachis. However, every swing from those weapons will considerably reduce your overall stamina.

  • Ki Pulse mechanic is exclusive to the samurai style

We've explained everything that needs to be known about Ki Pulse in this guide, so make sure to read it if you need extra explanation. In essence, Ki Pulse will allow you to regain some amount of stamina (Ki) mid-combat by pressing a dedicated button. If executed right, you'll maintain your stamina efficiently.

  • Samurai uses stances

While playing as a samurai, you'll be able to switch stances. Every stance has different skills and different attacks tied to them, and since there are three of them (low, high, and neutral), it gives you an enormous number of different combos and attack styles, so fighting as a samurai is more versatile.

  • Different set of skills (Martial Arts)

Both samurai and ninja styles have skills tied to them. By exploring the world, you'll come across samurai locks, which will grant you samurai skill points that can be spent on samurai martial arts skills. Martial arts are exclusive to samurai style and will be available for spending only there.

Ninja Style

Unlike the samurai style, where strength is the name of the game, the ninja style leans more towards agility and speed. While playing as a ninja, you'll move way faster, but your attacks will be less potent, and also you'll be more vulnerable.

  • Ninja moves very quickly

If you want to cover distances more quickly in Nioh 3, always choose to switch to ninja because in this style, you'll move as the wind. Although the samurai moves fast as well, it is simply incomparable with the ninja.

  • Ninja attacks are fast as lightning

If you choose to fight as a ninja, your attacks will be less potent, yes, but you'll be very fast and hit the enemies in quick succession. If you're facing a slower enemy, then the ninja fighting style is a must.

  • Mist is a mechanic exclusive for the ninja style

As the Ki Pulse mechanic is exclusive to the samurai style, Mist is for the ninja style, and this mechanic will make ninja even faster and more deadly if you know how to make the best out of it. Again, if you want to know more about this mechanic, check out our guide.

  • Ninjutsu set of skills

Ninjutsu skills are tied to the ninja style, and as was the case with the samurai style, you'll find the special ninja locks, which will give you the skill points spendable only inside the Ninjutsu skill tree.

Some other skills, like the passive ones you can activate through shrines, are also tied to the specific styles. Both styles, however, share the same range weapons, the same Guardian Spirit skills, and the same basic skills.

However, Guardian Spirits used for special Guardian Spirit attacks differ between styles.
