Stances during combat are very important part of the Samurai style in Nioh 3. If you don't know how to switch between different stances, here is the answer.

Nioh games are well-known for the combat complexity that overshadows perhaps every other Souls-like game out there, even the original ones made by From Software, like Elden Ring and Dark Souls games.

Nioh 3 isn't an exception; it even elevates everything to a whole new level with combat so deep and complex that at times, you'll probably lose yourself inside the numerous options this action RPG from Team Ninja has to offer.

One of the options introduced at the beginning of the game is the ability to change between styles; you can play as a ninja or as a samurai, and playing as each holds certain benefits.

Playing as a samurai will allow you to change different stances once you unlock them through the martial arts abilities. Once you unlock them, you'll immediately be puzzled on how to switch between them because the game never mentions this. If you're curious about this, here is how to do it.

How to unlock stances

To do this, you'll have to find a certain number of samurai points, and those points are gathered through finding Samurai's Locks. Samurai's Locks can be found inside chests or after beating certain enemies, and once you obtain one, you'll have one samurai point to spend.

After obtaining at least two samurai points, pause the game and navigate to the third tab inside the main menu called 'Acquire Martial Arts/Ninjitsu'. Once inside this menu, choose the samurai tab and unlock two skills located above and below the samurai icon called 'Low Stance' and 'High Stance'. The middle stance is unlocked by default.

How to switch stances

Once you've unlocked different stances, you'll see that they are shown on the screen in the lower right corner. However, the game won't explain to you anything about how to switch between them.

To do that, you'll have to hold the Square button (PlayStation controller) and then press the corresponding button that pops up next to the stance icon. The middle stance is activated by holding Square and pressing R1, the high stance by holding Square and pressing R2, and the low stance by holding Square and pressing X.

Different stances mean different combat styles and, of course, different ways of using martial arts. Our advice is to unlock the stance skills as soon as possible to get the most out of the samurai style in Nioh 3.
