Dune: Awakening - How to avoid the Sandworm

The Sandworm poses the biggest danger in the deserts of Arrakis, and wandering through them will always bring this godly creature after you. Here are a couple of methods on how to avoid its attention.

Dune: Awakening, the latest survival game from Funcom, will introduce some very unique survival abilities, including the one we are talking about today, and it is the Sandworm, a huge, godly creature that roams sandy areas of the Arrakis desert and kills everyone who enters its domain.

Crossing the desert is inevitable, and you'll have to do it on several occasions throughout your playtime. As the game progresses, some very important materials will be located in the open desert, and going there will become mandatory.

Why does Sandworm appear

As soon as you set foot into the open desert, your movements will cause vibrations, as revealed by the meter that appears on the screen. If you continue to run and cause more vibrations, the meter will turn red and start signalling that the Sandworm is coming. Sometimes the Sandworm will appear far enough for you to escape, and sometimes it will be very close to your position.

In any case, once the Sandworm spawns, the only course of action will be to run and try to reach the rocky grounds to escape it. If you fail, you will be eaten, and you'll lose all the content from your backpack. To prevent this from happening, here are some methods you can use to avoid the Sandworm's attention.

How to Avoid the Sandworm in Dune: Awakening

Here are some methods of avoiding the Sandworm's attention more efficiently:

  • Movement controls

Once you start moving through the desert, the vibration indicator will appear in the middle of the screen; moving slower will not make it disappear. However, if you stop for a moment, you can fool the worm, delaying his appearance.

However, once you start moving again, the vibrations will resume, so make sure to walk slowly and then pause briefly (2-3 secs). Repeat the process (walk, pause, walk, pause) until you're close enough to the rocks to be able to sprint before the worm can get you.

  • Using a sandbike

Let's make something clear right away: vehicles aren't faster than the sandworm, and if you rely on escaping it because you're on a sandbike or any other vehicle, you'll eventually get caught.

However, the vehicle will give you the upper hand while crossing some narrow deserts or when you're close to rocky terrain. Use the bike when you, for example, want to gather some materials that are close to the rocks, and even if the worm is alerted, you'll have enough time to escape. Also, if you don't know how to get a sandbike, here's our guide on how to do it.

  • Crouch while walking

Crouching and using some late-game suits will reduce the vibrations, and the Sandworm will take considerably longer to spot you. This method is useful if you want to explore some spots in the desert that are close to the rocks.

To reach those spots, simply crouch and move very slowly. Do what you came there to do and leave using the same method. Doing this won't alert the worm.

  • Avoid the Drumsand areas at all costs

Those areas are the ones marked with a red circle on the map. If you happen to step on those areas, vibrations will become considerably louder, and you'll attract the worm almost immediately.

When roaming through the desert, always check out your map to observe those areas, and do not, under any circumstances, go over them. Walking there will mean a certain death for you.

  • Set up the respawn point and empty your backpack when going for a desert excursion

This method might seem like something too obvious, but it is highly effective, nonetheless. If you want to explore the desert area for some gain, the first thing you need to do is to set the respawn point inside your base, stash everything you won't need there, wait for the night to avoid being exposed to the sun, and go for it then.

If you get caught, in the worst-case scenario, you'll lose the items you're carrying, like weapons or other gathering equipment. Also, if you know you won't meet the enemies, don't carry weapons, and if you go during the nighttime, you won't even need clothes.

Consider carrying as few items as possible, so if you get eaten by the Sandworm, you won't lose as much.

And that's pretty much that. Everything you can do to avoid being eaten by this ugly abomination. If you find this guide useful, make sure to check out other Dune: Awakening guides linked below.
