Dune: Awakening - Sandworm and sandstorm death explained

The two worst fates that can fall upon players in Dune: Awakening are to be eaten by the sandworm or to be killed during a sandstorm. If this happens, here is how to start from scratch.

Dune: Awakening, the newest survivor from Funcom, will put you in some difficult situations if you're not careful enough to heed the warnings the game is throwing your way, and the two worst situations, without doubt, are being eaten by the Worm or being killed due to too long exposure to a sandstorm.

If one of those two situations occurs, you'll not be able to respawn at usual places, or more precisely, you'll be able to do that, but without a single piece of equipment or anything else that belonged to you before such death happened.

Once this happens, and be sure it will happen sooner or later, here are some pieces of advice on how to start over and what should be the first couple of things you're going to have to do to be able to keep on with the game.

How to start over after being eaten by the sandworm or killed in a sandstorm

The sandworm is the ultimate danger that lurks inside the desert of Arrakis, especially in sandy terrain. Once you start moving over the sand, you'll get the on-screen warning showing how much noise your movements produce, and if it is too much, it will appear, and death is the inevitable outcome. The same thing goes for the death caused by a sandstorm.

If this happens to you for the first time, you'll have a chance to keep some of your equipment, but this is exclusive for the first such death; every other death will strip you naked, leaving you with nothing in your inventory. Depending on where and when the first sandworm or sandstorm death occurs, the equipment you get to keep will be different. For us, it was the bike parts along with a welding tool, but for you, it can be different.

In any case, the first thing you should do is go to the nearest base. To ease the process of respawning, the best course of action is to set up the respawn point inside each base you build, but if you forgot to do it, try to reach it using any means necessary; this step is crucial.

Once inside the base, the first thing you should do is to craft a primitive cutteray; this tool will help you get the basic materials, with copper being the most important one. Once you have it, go outside and gather as much copper as possible. If you're low on hydration, wait for the night and locate the plants with dew and hydrate this way.

Put the copper inside the refinery to make copper ingots, then go outside and gather fiber bushes; again, those are easy to find everywhere near the rocks.

Now for the water. The best way to collect it is to go outside and look at the sky if you're outside of Hagga Basin (the first area). Locate the flying ship with spotlights and make it spot you. Once it happens, the ship will send soldiers your way. Make sure to craft a weapon, a blood extractor, and a blood bag. Lure the soldiers to chase you to the base. Enter the base and shoot them through the door, one by one.

Once they're dead, go outside and extract their blood. Put the blood inside the blood purifier to get the necessary water. Now you should have enough materials to make some advanced tools, but our advice is that until you're fully recovered, do not move away from the base. If you need the blood for water reserves, use this luring strategy. Go outside, gather copper and iron, and build everything you need, and in the future, keep away from open desert spaces, and if you have to cross the desert, do it while driving a vehicle.
