Every beginning is difficult, and the same goes for any video game you start playing. Avowed isn't an exception, of course. This action RPG from Obsidian Entertainment can be a difficult game to understand, especially at the beginning, where you'll meet a whole bunch of tutorials that sometimes confuse you more than they help.
If you run into these problems and the game becomes somewhat overwhelming, don't worry—we got you covered because in this guide, we will explain to you what you should do at the beginning to make Avowed a far more enjoyable experience and to get most of it right from the start.
How to properly start Avowed
Being an RPG, Avowed features tonnes of different mechanics, but all those mechanics are really nothing new and, let's say, nothing never seen in the games of the same genre and setting. However, knowing how to approach the game from the very beginning can give you a great advantage.
Here are some beginner's tips and advices on how to properly begin playing Avowed
Follow the main quests until you reach the first city
If you started playing Avowed already, you've noticed that you're washed ashore with one of your companions. This first area of the game is a linear one, and you cannot explore it even if you want to. Of course, we are not talking about this area. The next area, called Downshore, is where the game opens up, but our advice is to refrain from exploring right away because some of the mechanics and the ways the game plays will be taught during this period.
Follow a couple of quests, and once you find yourself inside the first city, you'll notice many exclamation marks, which represent the side quest opportunities. After speaking with side quest givers, it is time to go and explore the world, not before that.
Explore the world
This tip or advice might seem too obvious; I mean, Avowed is an open-world game, and such games crave exploration, but in this game, exploration is probably the most important part of the gameplay because it is so rewarding.
The game's maps are designed in a way that while you go exploring, that particular part of the map is unfogged, and you can find all sorts of secrets, chests, pieces of equipment, and more scattered all over the world. Many good weapons you can find early in the game can be found if you go out there exploring.
Our advice is to explore so much that you unfog the entire maps. Doing so, you'll discover everything the game has to offer, and you'll be rewarded handsomely in the process.
Stick to the weapons and gear you like and upgrade them to the max
Even though the upgrading system in Avowed is quite conventional (check out our guide on how to upgrade gear if you don't know how), you'll find it pretty satisfying because you'll be able to convert even the most common weapons into killing machines if you put enough effort into upgrading them.
There's a great chance that you'll come across a weapon or armour that will suit your preferences, but as is custom with these games, the gear with better stats usually tends to replace them, even though you don't like their looks or abilities, or you just don't like them without any reason.
Well, in Avowed, if you like a certain weapon, just keep upgrading it, and it will be as powerful as any other weapon in the game.
Speak with your companions in camps
Speaking with your companions while you're resting in camps is of utmost importance if you like to widen the story and learn about their personal reasons why they're there and why they're doing what they're doing. Apart from learning their stories, you'll get entertained too because their sense of humour is nothing short of spectacular.
Apart from speaking with them, you can listen to conversations they lead with each other; those will bring even more interesting themes and sometimes some anecdotes from their lives that can be very entertaining and even humorous at times.
No gear is bad
Yes, exactly this. Do not miss picking up any weapon or piece of gear you find, even the ones that are far weaker than the ones you carry. Every piece of gear can be dismantled very easily, simply by holding the X button on the controller while inside the inventory menu.
Dismantling gear will give you basic upgrade materials that can be combined to make better ones, and if you get overencumbered, simply transfer the gear you don't use to the in-camp chest, and the beauty of it is that you don't have to walk to the camp to do that; all you have to do is just press a single button and voila, it is inside.
You can then either sell the gear or dismantle it, but you should know that you must never leave any gear unpicked because you can make a lot of use of it.
Do not play the game on easy or story difficulty
Seriously, don't do that; you're missing all the fun if you do. Given that Avowed is an RPG, the levelling system is present, and some areas of the game can be quite tough if your level doesn't match the one of the enemies, but instead of lowering difficulty, try to level up and revisit hard areas of the game once you're strong enough.
We say this because the fighting system in Avowed is very well-balanced and funny as hell. Once it clicks for you, you cannot get enough of it, but if you play on the easy, or God forbid, on the story difficulty, the game becomes extremely easy and without challenge; the fun fades away very quickly.
To prevent the combat from becoming pure button mashing, play at least on medium difficulty; this will force you to experiment with builds and use all your and the abilities of your companions, which will make the gameplay very enjoyable.
And that's pretty much it. All that is left is to wish you a pleasant journey in Avowed, which, if played correctly, can become a true fun fest. Happy hunting, Godlike!
