Although most competitive multiplayer games use some form of SBMM (skill-based matchmaking), in Ubisoft's new shooter you never know who you'll be playing with or against.
Skill-based matchmaking or SBMM for short is an integral part of most competitive multiplayer games, regardless of the genre they belong to. It is designed in such a way that when creating parties, it brings together equally skilled players, which generally works solidly, except in certain cases.
Ubisoft should consider improving XDefiant's party system to ensure fair matches and elevate the game from a failed project to a successful competitive shooter.
For example, popular streamers allegedly get easier opponents or some other advantage in certain games, which of course no one will publicly admit, or when an extremely good player re-rolls, i.e. creates a new user account and outskills everyone around him, at least until his rating increases.
Regardless of its imperfections, SBMM is certainly a welcome option, especially for beginners and weaker players, but also for professionals who have the opportunity to improve further because they will play against their peers and learn from their own mistakes.
Unfortunately, Ubisoft's fresh shooter XDefiant, or rather its party creation system, doesn't use anything like that. They will simply pick up players who are registered and put them in a party where they can run into a previously formed group of professional players who play in tournaments.
Hopefully, Ubisoft will think carefully about potential improvements to XDefiant like they did with Ranbow Six Siege, elevating it from a failed project to a successful competitive shooter, because otherwise, its future is extremely uncertain.
