Ubisoft have recently shared a new blog post on their website where they talk more about the Assassin's Creed Shadows and the game's two protagonists - black samurai Yasuke and female ninja Naoe.
In the blog post, Ubisoft go through various topics including the pair's backgrounds, gameplay differences, and interestingly, sexual preferences. One very specific paragraph mentions that players will get to romance "different types of people" they meet in Assassin's Creed Shadows and experience "a multitude of relationships".
"Naoe and Yasuke’s disparate personalities also lead them to have different relationships and rapports with other characters, and they don’t always feel the same way about people, nor do people always feel the same way about them. Romantically, they will also attract and be attracted to different types of people. Through the pair, players will get to experience a multitude of relationships," Ubisoft said.
Of course, this is not the first Assassin's Creed game to allow players to choose their romantic relationships to their liking. In previous games like Odyssey and Valhalla, protagonists like Kassandra and Eivor are bisexual but can also be straight or gay depending on the player's choices. Yes, you can pretty much sleep with anyone you want.
The series also featured many other LGBTQ+ side characters and Assassin's Creed Shadows will probably continue that tradition with its story.
In my opinion, it's certainly great that Ubisoft are giving players the freedom of choice when it comes to such matters. It's commendable that the game won't lock out some potential relationships so players can romance whoever they want, regardless of their gender.
Let's just hope that such a decision won't result in another round of backlash from some "fans" as we already have plenty of questionable opinions online regarding the game's black character Yasuke.
