Starfield is certainly one of the most anticipated RPGs of this generation and could even end up being the biggest game ever on Xbox Series X|S so it's somewhat expected that every bit of information about the game will be subject to many discussions online.
That's pretty much what happened over the last couple of days regarding the game's performance on Xbox Series X|S consoles. Bethesda finally confirmed that Starfield will be locked to 30 FPS on the console, which disappointed some players who expected a performance mode.
However, Bethesda have revealed why they made a decision to only have 30 FPS and it's a pretty good reason, to be honest. According to Todd Howard, the team didn't want to sacrifice any game features to hit 60 FPS. This includes huge, detailed open worlds with all the interactivity and simulation aspects that make Bethesda games so iconic.
"We don't ever want to sacrifice that experience that makes our games feel really, really special," Howard explained.
Additionally, Howard revealed that the game can run at above 30 FPS and even close to 60 FPS in some certain scenarios but the design team simply decided it's better to have consistency and more headroom for other mechanics, which again, makes a lot of sense.
As for PC performance, the game will run at a higher frame rate if you have hardware that's capable of delivering that. Bethesda have shared early PC system requirements which don't look too scary but we'll have to wait for a detailed sheet with 1440p and 4K requirements to see just how demanding this sci-fi RPG is.
Starfield is officially launching on September 6, 2023, for PC and Xbox Series X|S. The game is also coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one. You can learn more about the pre-order details and editions in the guide below.
