Game of the Year awards and similar end-of-year accolades, recognising exceptional achievements across various aspects of gaming, often generate controversies within the gaming community, leading to doubts about the legitimacy of these awards.
Yesterday, a notable incident occurred, and its repercussions began surfacing today. Steam proclaimed Starfield, Bethesda's RPG sensation of the year, as the game with the most innovative gameplay in 2023. This announcement triggered a wave of frustration and mockery among players on social media.
While it's not claimed that Starfield is a bad game, the claim of its innovativeness is highly debatable, as evidenced by comments from players on the official Starfield X account. Some of these comments are provided below for your consideration.
"I'm pretty sure that was done as a joke, the same way RDR2 got a "Labour of Love" while not receiving updates for 3 years. I'm afraid there's nothing innovative in Starfield's gameplay whatsoever."
"Innovative? It's probably the least innovative game I've ever played."
"What did it innovate? How to make the most boring game ever?"
“Most innovative,” my man, you literally force us to fast-travel to 95%+ of the locations."
And those are just some of the comments; if you are willing to read them all, follow the X post below.
Starfield came out in early September last year, exclusively for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Despite high expectations for it to compete for Game of the Year, things didn't go as planned for Bethesda and Microsoft. However, winning the award for the most innovative gameplay is significant. Decide for yourself if Starfield truly deserves it or not.
