Game Science's highly-anticipated action RPG Black Myth: Wukong share some similarities with other souls-like games but it won't feature everything games of this genre usually include.

As Black Myth: Wukong is nearing its official release, we're getting more details about this highly-anticipated action RPG from developer Game Science. Recently, it's been revealed that the game won't really be a traditional souls-like game since it lacks a couple of key design features that are found in games of this popular genre.

Various previews of the game reveal that players will not lose experience points (XP) when they die, which is one of the key features of From Software's games. Basically, once the enemies get the better of you in Dark Souls, Elden Ring or any other From Software game, you will lose your XP and unless you go back to the place of death and retrieve it before you die again, the points will be lost forever.

This feature won't be present in Black Myth: Wukong, which will make Game Science's title a little less challenging game.

Black Myth: Wukong also comes with colour-coded gear rarities, which is not something you usually find on souls-like games. Green, Blue, Purple and Orange colours for weapon rarities are frequent in various looter shooters but souls-like games tend to have one rarity for all gear in the game.

You can upgrade these weapons, though, so you get "Random Sword +1" or "Big Mace +2" but weapons won't suddenly get a new rarity level.

Other non souls-like features that are present in Black Myth: Wukong include a more linear environment design which seems to suggest the exploration will be minimal, then there's a skill tree and you can also pause the game at any given moment.

Some previews describe the game as a boss rush experience, where you fight a boss, then run fast through a very linear level until the next boss and then repeat the process again.

Some fans will find this exciting there's no doubt about it but many others, including yours truly, will be a bit disappointed that Black Myth: Wukong seems to be solely focused on boss fights.

It is possible that the portion of the game which was available in preview didn't tell the full picture and perhaps there is more exploration in other levels of the game so I hold my judgment until I actually get to play this one in a couple of months.

Black Myth: Wukong is officially hitting the shelves on August 20, 2024, for PC and PlayStation 5. The game will also be coming to the Xbox consoles but not at this time as this version needs further optimisation according to the developers.
