Casey Hudson, the director behind the original Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect trilogy, has announced his return to the Star Wars galaxy with a new single-player RPG from his studio Arcanaut.

Casey Hudson, the director behind the original Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, has announced his return to the Star Wars galaxy. At The Game Awards 2025, Arcanaut Studios, Hudson's newly founded development team, officially unveiled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a single-player narrative-driven action RPG developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.

One very important note - The game is being pitched as a spiritual successor to KOTOR rather than a direct sequel or continuation. Hudson confirmed the project is a completely new story set during the Old Republic era, though it's being built by many of the people who helped shape the legacy of the original 2003 game.

"Working on KOTOR was one of the defining experiences of my career," Hudson said. "With Fate of the Old Republic, we're telling a completely new and different story with everything we've learned since - crafting an adventure about choice, destiny, and the timeless struggle between light and dark."

A Choice-driven RPG

The game promises to deliver the choice-driven RPG experience KOTOR was known for, with players taking on the role of a Force user navigating a galaxy on the edge of rebirth. Every decision players make on their journey will apparently shape their path toward the light or dark side. Hudson promises innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and heart-pounding combat. Given that we haven't seen anything apart from the cinematic teaser, it's hard to say if any of this will come to fruition.

Two decades in the waiting

Hudson revaled that he has been in contact with Lucasfilm Games for over two decades since the original KOTOR, waiting for the right opportunity to return to Star Wars. After co-founding Arcanaut Studios in July 2025, the stars finally aligned. The studio is made up of veteran developers and storytellers, all working toward what Hudson calls "a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience." Ah, don't you love marketing buzzwords?

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is currently in early development for PC and consoles. Given how early in production the game is, Hudson acknowledged there are many challenges ahead, but expressed gratitude for the support KOTOR fans have shown over the years and promised to share more details as development progresses.
