The Witcher 3 might be receiving a surprise third expansion nearly a decade after launch, according to Polish industry insider Borys Nieśpielak. Speaking on a YouTube podcast with Remigiusz Maciaszek (thanks, Reddit), Nieśpielak stated he's confirmed the DLC's existence with multiple sources and expects an announcement at The Game Awards this week.
"This is the best place to announce it, and I would be surprised if it wasn't announced now," Nieśpielak said (machine translated). He previously accurately revealed details about CD Projekt Red (CDPR) titles, lending credibility to the claim, though nothing's confirmed until CDPR officially announces.
Following Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine
The Witcher 3's two existing expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are considered masterpieces, with Blood and Wine providing a satisfying conclusion to Geralt's story. A third expansion arriving years later feels unexpected, though not unprecedented, given CDPR's continued support through enhanced editions and re-releases.
Speculation suggests the rumoured DLC could bridge The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4, potentially introducing new characters or setting up narrative threads for the upcoming sequel starring Ciri. Whether that means playing as Geralt one final time or transitioning to Ciri remains pure speculation.
Enhanced editions and Switch 2 potential
The Witcher 3 maintains strong player numbers despite launching way back in 2015 (time really flies, doesn't it?), receiving next-gen updates and re-releases across platforms. A proper Nintendo Switch 2 version could arrive alongside this alleged expansion, as fans have been asking for an upgrade to the game for quite a while now.
For now, it's unconfirmed rumours from a credible source rather than an official announcement. Whether CDPR surprises fans at The Game Awards on December 11th or the rumour proves inaccurate, we'll discover soon enough.
The Game Awards airs tonight at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET / 1:30 AM CET / 00:30 BST.
