Developer Archetype Entertainment have given us our first proper look at their sci-fi adventure RPG Exodus in action, and if your expectations were set on a lengthy gameplay showcase, you may want to adjust those.
The video runs to less than two minutes, with actual combat footage accounting for roughly thirty seconds of that. The rest is an Uncharted-style rope swing across a chasm and a stretch of fairly uneventful walking towards a big room with a big alien face, which is so obviously important to the story.
The little of combat that we do see is decent enough. It leans into the cover-based shoot and advance rhythm that Mass Effect players will recognise immediately, and there is nothing wrong with that. The UI is clean and stays out of the way, though it has a slightly generic sci-fi look to it that I expect will be tidied up before launch.
Despite being a little underwhelming as first gameplay reveals go, mainly due to the length and the content Archetype decided to show, the footage still managed to get me going, and I say that as someone who has been following this since the original announcement.
There is something about Exodus that just feels like a proper spiritual successor to Mass Effect in the best possible way, and my inner Commander Shepard is very much paying attention.
I will say, my feelings on the game's visual style have shifted since it was first shown. Early on, I was not entirely sold on how it looked. It feels more refined now, and more to my taste.
Archetype closed the video by confirming a full gameplay reveal is coming this summer, likely at one of the major showcases, Xbox Games Showcase, PlayStation State of Play, or Summer Game Fest, being the obvious candidates.
Whatever the occasion, Exodus is firmly on my list.
