Archetype Entertainment have given us a new Exodus trailer at The Game Awards, showcasing protagonist Jun Aslan's extraordinary abilities, including bridge creation and ground-shattering energy attacks. The sci-fi RPG from BioWare veterans launches early 2027, featuring Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey.

Archetype Entertainment debuted a new Exodus trailer at The Game Awards, demonstrating protagonist Jun Aslan's abilities whilst confirming an early 2027 release window, which is a bit longer wait than I was anticipating. The footage showcases somewhat improved visuals compared to previous reveals, environmental manipulation powers including bridge creation, devastating ground-slam energy attacks, and massive alien creatures evoking Star Wars' Snoke in scale and presence.

The game's protagonist Jun Aslan comes from humble origins whilst carrying the legacy of the revered Traveller dynasty. Hidden genetic heritage grants him special powers unlike any other human. We got to see some of these abilities in the trailer, demonstrated through environmental manipulation like creating bridges from thin air and channeling green energy through the ground to obliterate enemies with seismic force.

Matthew McConaughey voices C.C. Orlev, Jun's mentor and "voice of wisdom", guiding the protagonist at crucial moments in his first video game role. As a big fan of Matthew's work, this is music to my ears.

RPG mechanics and moral choices

Players will shape Jun's destiny through moral choices and conflicting agendas echoing across generations, thanks to time dilation mechanics central to Exodus' narrative framework. Whilst players journey through space, years or decades pass on their home planet, meaning decisions reverberate through time with consequences affecting entire civilisations long after departure. It's a fascinating concept that we've seen in Interstellar, and I'm really eager to see how it works in Exodus.

Romanceable companions

Exodus also features companions with unique motivations, secrets, and romance options. Archetype describes companions as "pretty thirsty," suggesting BioWare-style relationship mechanics where romantic entanglements intertwine with loyalty missions and character development. Whether this achieves Mass Effect's nuanced characterisation or falls into cringeworthy dialogue depends entirely on the writing quality, so I'm staying cautiously optimistic here.

Early 2027 launch window

Exodus releases early 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. The timeline provides substantial development runway for Archetype's debut project, so let's hope this translates to polished execution since the performance in the trailer is noticeably poor.
