Japanese tech giant Sony is reportedly weighing a significant delay to its next PlayStation console, with Bloomberg reporting the company is now considering pushing the PS6 debut back to 2028 or potentially 2029. There's been no official confirmation from Sony, but the report suggests internal timelines are being reconsidered at the highest levels.
The delay would certainly represent a notable strategic shift. A 2029 launch would mean nearly a decade between PlayStation generations, significantly longer than the roughly seven years separating PS4 and PS5. Bloomberg's sources describe the potential postponement as "a major upset to a carefully orchestrated strategy to sustain user engagement between hardware generations," suggesting Sony had previously planned a tighter transition window.
The reasoning behind the potential delay hasn't been explicitly detailed, though supply chain pressures, increasing memory costs, and the ongoing strong performance of PS5 may all factor into the decision. PS5 has sold exceptionally well throughout its lifecycle, potentially reducing urgency around a successor launch.
In the same report, Bloomberg notes that Nintendo is considering raising the price of Switch 2 in 2026, citing the console's contribution to surplus demand in 2025 driven largely by storage card purchases. Neither Sony nor Nintendo responded to Bloomberg's requests for comment, leaving both reports unconfirmed so it's important to take the info with a grain of salt.
For PlayStation fans hoping to see next-generation hardware sooner rather than later, the news will be disappointing but honestly, PS5 is still a fine consoles and the games that are coming out don't seem like they're fully utilising the hardware anyway.
A 2028-2029 window suggests PS5 still has considerable runway ahead of it, with Sony likely to continue investing in first-party titles to sustain the platform in the interim.
The company recently held a State of Play showcase, where they unveiled part of their future first-party games like Marathon, God of War trilogy remake and Saros. In addition, more unannounced titles from studios like Santa Monica are expected soon.
