Overwatch cross-play would take a while, Blizzard says

Blizzard have finally announced Overwatch for Nintendo Switch, which now raises the question of cross-play. Unfortunately, the company doesn't seem to be thinking about it at the moment, as it's a long road to make this feature a reality.

They confirmed the to be 15 October 2019, when Switch owners will finally get to play the game on Nintendo's little guy, but it'll take more before Blizzard consider cross-play essential for the Overwatch experience.

"We've seen how compelling cross-system play can be for our community, and we're excited about the potential. There's still a lot of work to do on both our side and the platforms' side to determine whether this is something that makes sense for Overwatch, and we're keeping an eye on how cross-play systems and technology develop", the dev told Endgadget.

As you could've seen from the trailer, Overwatch Switch uses motion controls for different tasks, so it's understandable that Blizzard would be steering clear of it for now.

"Line up the perfect shot using Nintendo Switch's built-in gyroscopic motion controls, or engage the opposing team with the analog control sticks", the game's description reads.

Same goes for cross-save, of course, so if you're planning to use that favourite skin, whichever Overwatch character it may belong to, you'll have to re-earn it in most of the cases.

As for the game itself, Blizzard made Overwatch for Switch quite an attractive package, where $39.99 gets you the Legendary Edition game and three months of Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Those who pre-ordered the game will be getting Widowmaker's Noire skin as well, while all Switch Overwatchers get a single Golden Loot Box. These guarantee at least a single legendary drop, so good luck.

Since the Switch version of Overwatch is the Legendary Edition, buying it gets you 15 skins but, as usual, there are plenty more to be unlocked. The game launches as a digital version and a boxed version containing a download code.
