PlayStation Brazil's Twitter account may have leaked a time-frame for Overwatch 2's release. The tweet and the link to an interview they did with chief writer Michael Chu and assistant director Aaron Keller caused the fans to leap into a frenzy.
PlayStation Brazil might have accidentally revealed a time-frame for Overwatch 2's launch. The news in question came - like so many things these days - via Twitter. In the since-deleted tweet, PlayStation Brazil wrote:
"2020 será o ano em que Overwatch 2 chega ao PS4, e para nos prepararmos, conversamos com alguns de seus desenvolvedores, que nos deram informações quentes"
All that roughly translates to:
"2020 will be the year Overwatch 2 comes to PS4, and to get ready, we talked to some of its developers, who gave us hot information"
The tweet also contained a link to an interview they had with Overwatch 2 chief writer Michael Chu and assistant director Aaron Keller.
Overwatch 2 was announced in November 2019, at Blizzcon and we got a cinematic trailer and some hints at what the game will actually entail.
However, no release date - or even a time frame was given. Jeff Kaplan, speaking at the release panel said: "I have no idea, like, let’s just make it great, that’s what we care about more than anything,". He added that "We don’t have a date in mind".
The tweet in question did fire up the internet sleuths and those guys started digging around all the available information, looking for clues that the game was further along in its development than Jeff might have led us to believe.
This practice wouldn't be new in the world of Overwatch as its developers famously have multiple heroes almost ready to go when they announce a new one. This has lead the fans to believe that the sequel will launch in Fall/Winter 2020.
The eagle-eyed enthusiasts went back to pore over the Overwatch 2 cinematic trailer and the interview itself in search of information and, arguably, they found some. Reddit user recently unearthed a post by Geoff Goodman, detailing " " of weapons and abilities for Overwatch 2.
The Bomblet Gun Geoff mentions in the forum post sounds a lot like the one we've seen Echo use in the trailer for Overwatch 2. This morsel encouraged the fans to look at the trailer more closely and they found that there actually are some hints at a "team-up" kind of gameplay that we could see in the sequel.
The take-away is that there could be some hero-specific interactions that will allow the players to link multiple abilities (and Ultimates) in a number of ways to defeat the PvE bosses. These include the instance when Brigitte and Reinhardt merge their shields or when Tracer and Mei synergise their Ultimates to defeat the giant robot from the trailer.
This is pure speculation however, and as none of the new information came from Blizzard themselves, you're advised to take it with a heap of salt. Just like Competitive Play in Overwatch!
