Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon faced a turbulent situation following its reveal in the PlayStation 2023 showcase. Since its announcement the game has been plagued by plagiarism accusations and negative player feedback from its closed alpha testing sessions.
To ramp up the game to a stronger state, Bungie decided to postpone the game's initial release for a massive overhaul to the game's core systems. Now, to everyone's surprise, Bungie has announced a March 2026 release window with a set of new changes made in accordance with past negative feedback.
All New Changes in Bungie's Marathon
Since the massive storm caused by Marathon's closed alpha testing in this year's April, Bungie has been working on fixing the game up from the ground up by introducing new changes to key gameplay features.
In a recent video documentary, Bungie confirms the game's March 2026 release window alongside all the new changes made to gameplay features. Here's an overview of all the new changes you can expect to see in Marathon:
- Marathon will finally feature proximity chat, allowing players to interact with players out in the open. The addition of a proximity chat system enforces dynamic player interaction, creating a unique experience in every run.
- Bungie introduces a new solo experience and Runner shell, Rook. It prioritises the solo scavenger experience alongside the usual teamplay modes.
- The solo queue experience has also been revamped to make the experience more streamlined for players who decide to jump into the wild alone.
- Visual fidelity has also been revamped. The game features a clearer visual palette, allowing players to feast their eyes on the beauty of Marathon.
- The game has been tailored to run perfectly on the hardware of PlayStation 5, considering Sony's major stake in Bungie.
Marathon releases on all platforms in March 2026 at the target price of $39.99/€39.99/£34.99, with additional regional pricing to be announced. Marathon's major revamp is Sony and Bungie's move towards making the game a worthy competitor in the extraction shooter genre. With ARC Raiders' unparalleled success on all platforms, it is very apparent that Bungie has put in a lot of love into Marathon to make the game stand out on its own.
