Marathon is a new upcoming extraction shooter from Bungie, the creators of Destiny. While the game was scheduled to be released in last year's September, after player feedback and criticism, it was delayed to March 5, 2026.
Now almost a month away from the game's official worldwide release, players are gearing up to know more about the new extraction shooter. According to new gameplay intel, Marathon will officially feature 7 playable classes at launch. Here's an overview of all playable classes (runner shells) in Marathon, available at launch.
All Playable Classes in Marathon at Launch
From the latest build of the game and dev directs, it has been confirmed that Marathon will launch with 7 playable classes on day one. Here's a look at all the classes and how they will work in-game:
- Destroyer - Tank/Frontliner
- This is the heavy runner shell, which is entirely focused on aggressive combat. Players who choose this class will want to play at the frontline by absorbing and tanking damage.
- Assassin - Stealth Class
- The Assassin runner shell is made for players who thrive on catching people off guard. This specific class utilises camo tech to dip in and out of enemy vision.
- Recon - Intel
- The Recon runner shell prioritises information over everything. With this class, players can mark or see other players through the wall. Moreover, recon class players can also see enemy footprint trails.
- Vandal - Mobility
- The Vandal runner shell focuses on maximum mobility, with abilities like powersliding and double jump. It seems like the Vandal shell will be a meta class for players focusing on fast-paced gameplay.
- Thief - Looting
- The Thief runner shell focuses on maximising looting potential. It is specifically made to prioritise looting over combat in the wild.
- Triage - Support/Battle Medic
- The Triage runner shell is the only medic class in Marathon. This class is specifically made with healing and revival as its foundation. From the looks of it, the Triage class will surely be an important pick for squad play in Marathon.
- Rook - Free Loadout Class
- The Rook runner shell is specifically made for Scavenger mode in Marathon. When players pick this class, they will be dropped into ongoing matches with no weapons and items. This no-risk, high-reward player class will allow players to keep everything they find in the match.
Bungie has officially announced that Marathon will release on March 5 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on Steam. Players can expect to jump in and get their hands on these exclusive 7 playable classes at launch.
