Marathon has soared to a completely new shell ahead of its launch. Since the game's announcement, it has been plagued by issues ranging from plagiarised art to negative player feedback during closed playtest sessions, which led to the game's delayed release.
Marathon is slated for release on March 5, 2026, with a server slam scheduled to go live on February 26. As the release date is fast approaching, Bungie is sharing their plans surrounding Marathon, which include their approaches to deal with cheaters, exploits, and server-sided issues.
Bungie Draws a Hard Line Ahead of Marathon's Launch
Bungie has shared their bold plans to adamantly combat cheaters and exploiters, alongside their plans to maintain server stability and security. Here's an overview of what players can expect to see in Marathon at launch:
- Dedicated servers
- No second chances for cheaters
- Server-side authority over key actions to reduce exploits
- Fog of War to limit wall hacks and loot revealers
- Disconnect recovery (for connection issues)
Bungie's stance on cheaters is strict and upfront: no second chances if you are caught using hacks or cheats. Their straightforward no-nonsense approach with cheaters has a stark contrast with Embark's plans to counter cheats in ARC Raiders. Moreover, as Bungie plans to use dedicated servers with server-sided authority over key actions, there are reduced chances of player-sided exploits that might break the game's flow.
Fog of war will be actively used in Marathon to limit how much information is relayed to a player during the game, which manages to counter wallhacks and loot reveal cheats.
Lastly, Bungie has stated that players can reconnect to a match if they are disconnected from it due to network issues. Additionally, if a client-side issue disconnects a player from the game, leading to constant errors and gear loss, Bungie has stated that they will put in an effort to recover lost gear.
