Marathon's release might have faced the shakiest trajectory of all time. Since the game's announcement, Bungie has faced many major hiccups, which include the recent indefinite delay of the game's release.
Following the game's reveal trailer a few weeks ago, there has been major development regarding the game, which includes unsatisfactory player feedback from the game's closed Alpha testing and a plagiarism controversy.
Bungie Delays Marathon's Release Indefinitely
In a recent official blog post, Bungie shared an update on Marathon's release stating, "Thank you not only for your passionate feedback around the Marathon reveal and Alpha playtest but also for your patience while we took the time to listen closely and chart our next steps. After much discussion within our Dev team, we’ve made the decision to delay the September 23rd release."
The closed alpha testing of the game brought out various issues, and fixing them has become the topmost priority for the dev team. This includes changes to the game's mechanics and other in-game aspects.
Bungie's plans for the game feature drastic changes to AI behaviour and survival mechanics. Moreover, the dev team has plans to create a more dynamic and robust combat mechanic. Here are the main focus areas the dev team will be working on:
- Upping the Survival Game
- More challenging and engaging AI encounters
- More rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events
- Making combat more tense and strategic
- Doubling down on the Marathon Universe
- Increased visual fidelity
- More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
- A darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy
- Adding more social experiences
- A better player experience for solo/duos
- Prox chat, so social stories can come to life
Taking everything into account, there is no confirmation or details regarding when the game might get released now. Bungie also stated that "You’ll hear from us again later this Fall when we can share the progress we’ve made, alongside the game’s new release date."
