Riot Games is preparing to introduce a brand-new game mode for League of Legends in the 2025 season: Swiftplay. It promises a quicker way to experience Summoner's Rift, targeting those who enjoy quick matches but don't want to lose the core feeling of the game.
Swiftplay comes from the building blocks of Riot's previous experiment with the Quickplay mode, which came out in March 2023. Quickplay replaced Blind Pick by allowing players to pre-select champions and roles, skipping the tedious Champion Select process.
While it fixed issues such as dodging during champion select, it didn't offer anything unique compared to Draft Pick, which remained the preferred mode for traditional gameplay. Quickplay also had poor UI design, leading to its unpopularity.
In response, Riot says Quickplay will be retired in early 2025 in favor of Swiftplay, which streamlines the League of Legends experience: faster gold and experience gain, quicker objective spawns, and shorter match times.
The goal with Swiftplay is to keep the heart of Summoner's Rift intact while shaving a significant amount of time off each match.
Swiftplay game mode explained
- Following is what distinguishes Swiftplay from classic mode:
- Rewards of gold and experience increase with progression.
- Comeback mechanics are more effective, and the rewards for defeating under-leveled opponents are reduced.
- Objectives like turret plates and Baron Nashor spawn earlier.
- The Dragon Soul only needs three drakes, not four.
- Support and jungle quests go through a bit faster, while support items are more expensive but have better stats.
- Nearby champion gold reduced unless killed by a champion.
Swiftplay finally launches with Patch 25.S1.1, scheduled to drop sometime in early January 2025. While no official date has been announced yet, many are looking forward to this much speedier, action-packed version of Summoner's Rift.
