League of Legends progression system changes - Everything you need to know

Riot Games made changes to League of Legends' progression system, making unlocking champions much harder and frustrating without spending money.

Riot Games has been facing a fan outcry after introducing new changes to the progression and champion unlock system within League of Legends.

Such changes have made unlocking champions, more so for newer players, significantly more frustrating to achieve without spending any money.

Some key features that had been integral to helping players unlock champions and rewarding them in the old system are either removed or largely changed. Here are all the changes.

Level-up Capsules removed

Previously, leveling up rewarded Champion Shards, which could be redeemed for Blue Essence or used to unlock champions at a discount.

Now, at level 30 onwards, the players will receive only decorative borders after every 25 levels - no Blue Essence or Champion Shards.

Hextech Chests removed

No more Hextech Chests for hitting Mastery milestones - instead, players will receive Battle Pass XP, which won't directly help in unlocking champions.

First Win of Day rewards changed

The daily First Win bonus included 50 Blue Essence and XP and offered a smooth, steady way to progress.

It now only grants Battle Pass XP, which has less immediate value in terms of unlocking champions.

Battle Pass rewards

New Noxus Battle Pass is 8 weeks long, but only rewards three Champion Capsules and a total of 4,750 Blue Essence.

The rewards for older passes, like the Arcane Pass, were a lot better and allowed much more flexibility with choices of unlocks on champions.

Lack of repeatable rewards

The fact that, even after completing the Battle Pass, which is 50 levels, players get only 50 Blue Essence for every five additional levels makes grind for champions painfully slow and inefficient.

Community reactions

Players have done the math, stating that with the new system in place, it may take upwards of 882 hours of gameplay to unlock just one champion for free after completing the Battle Pass.

With currently 170 champions in the game and many more added on a regular schedule, it will be virtually impossible for newer players to ever catch up.

While Riot has cut the average champion cost down from 6,300 to around 3,000 Blue Essence, removing key progression systems makes it much harder to earn Blue Essence.

A new player could theoretically take up to six years of continuous play to unlock all champions-new releases during that time not included.

Final thoughts

Since then, the fanbase has taken to every social media and forum platform to voice frustration; many argue Riot is making the game less friendly to new players.

Discussions have arisen on Reddit and other platforms, demanding Riot take concern and adjust the system in balance. The changes have left many players feeling disheartened, especially because League of Legends has always relied on its diverse roster of champions to keep gameplay fresh and exciting.

Only time will tell if Riot responds to the growing dissatisfaction within the community.
