League of Legends brings back Hextech Chests

The decision to eliminate popular loot boxes from free rewards caused major public backlash which forced Riot to restore them to the game's Battle Pass system beginning with Act 2.

After receiving intense feedback from players Riot Games declared that Hextech Chests will once again be available for League of Legends players.

Players earned Hextech Chests by reaching Champion Mastery milestones and completing other in-game achievements and then used Hextech Keys to unlock cosmetics and loot. The launch of the new Battle Pass system resulted in Riot Games moving the Hextech Chests from free rewards to purchasable items that cost real money.

The player base expressed frustration over this decision and regularly demanded “Hextech Chests when?” during League of Legends discussions.

Riot’s response: Hextech Chests return in Act 2

During their latest developer update video League of Legends creators Meddler and Pabro acknowledged that removing Hextech Chests was a mistake.

Pabro recognized during the developer update that players valued Hextech Chests beyond their basic function of delivering items.

Hextech Chests significantly contributed to the rewarding experience of playing in League for many players. We did not understand how important Hextech Chests were to you before implementing changes that did not succeed. As a result, Chests are coming back.

Act 2 will reintroduce the ability for players to earn up to ten Hextech Chests and Keys starting next week. This update requires players to give up two Battle Pass free skins to restore Hextech Chests.

How will Hextech Chests be earned?

This guide explains how players will be able to acquire Hextech Chests in the future.

Players will receive eight Hextech Chests and Keys through the free Battle Pass instead of the Seasonal Skin and the 1350 RP-or-lower skin.

The Honor System will provide two extra Hextech Chests as rewards.

Riot confirmed that players will experience identical loot rates when obtaining Chests via Battle Pass achievements or Honor system rewards.

Players show a preference for Hextech Chests than Set Skins because they deliver randomized rewards which better suit their champion collections.

The Battle Pass free skins presented a major problem since they were static rewards which offered no motivation to players who did not use the associated champion to earn them.

The return of Hextech Chests by Riot guarantees players will get randomized loot which better suits their champion collection while enhancing the excitement and value of rewards.
