Riot Games has started implementing strong measures to remove the lane swap strategy from League of Legends. Patch 25.05 will bring in severe anti-lane swap mechanics which could completely transform early game strategies.
Over the last year lane swapping has become a divisive yet widely adopted strategy in League of Legends. The common strategy of lane swapping requires Top and Bot lane players to exchange their lanes early during gameplay.
The goal of this change
- Top laners should steer clear of disadvantageous lane matchups when possible.
- Allow hyper-scaling ADCs to farm safely so they can reach their power spikes through protective measures.
- Taking away gold and experience from enemy laners creates an unfair advantage.
Riot attempted to stop lane swapping by fortifying Top and Mid lane turrets but many players and professional teams kept employing this strategy.
Riot is implementing significant modifications with the purpose of making lane swapping permanently less favorable.
Upcoming anti-lane swap changes
The Anti-Lane Swap Mechanics for Patch 25.05 are introduced in this breakdown.
- Turret durability boost for Top and Mid lanes has been removed leading to standard turret durability across all lanes.
- Outer Turrets now receive a 95% damage reduction when two enemy champions who are not Jungle champions appear in Top or Mid lanes.
- Outer Turrets inflict 300% damage to Minions which creates additional challenges for early game pushes.
- Enemy champions who attempt to lane swap will receive only 50% of their normal experience and gold income.
- The defending champion closest to Minion or Turret kills will receive the gold reward.
- When defending champions face a lane swap, they receive additional 20% gold and XP rewards.
- Lane Swap Detection Timing - The system will detect lane swaps at 1: The detection system identifies lane swaps from 1:30 to 4:00 in the Top lane and up to 2:25 in the Mid lane.
How the detection system works
When a game detects a lane swap attempt it applies a 25-second debuff to affected champions which restricts their ability to earn XP and gold.
Potential issues with these changes
Riot intends to stop lane swapping but this approach may lead to several unexpected problems.
Early-game roaming champs such as Bard, Rakan and Nautilus will find it difficult to affect the map while preserving their solo laners' XP and gold.
Certain players might deliberately sabotage games by leading their teammates into the restricted zone which triggers the debuff and enables trolling behavior.
The Anti-Lane Swap changes become effective upon the release of Patch 25.05 on March 5, 2025.
