League of Legends Hextech Chests have existed since 2016, launching as part of the Hextech Crafting system. You could earn up to four chests a month through good game performance, with additional chests rewarded as Ranked rewards.
They could be opened with Hextech Keys to receive Champion Shards, Emotes, Ward Skins and even Ultimate Skins if you were fortunate.
But toward the end of 2024, Riot began phasing chests out, making them more difficult to get, and by Season 2025, they eliminated them altogether. Of course, the community didn’t take the decision lying down. Disgruntled players "attacked" Riot’s YouTube videos with a lot of comments regarding the Hextech Chests removal.
Why did Riot remove them?
In a Dev Update video titled “Season One Check-in”, Riot Meddler and Riot Pabro explained why the system was scrapped. According to them, Hextech Chests were never meant to be the primary way players got skins - but over time, they became exactly that.
With so many players relying on them instead of buying skins, it started to impact Riot’s revenue. Since skins are the game’s biggest source of income, keeping the Hextech Chest system just wasn’t sustainable.
Even though Hextech Chests are gone, Riot hinted at new ways to reward players in the future. While there’s no word on what that might look like yet, it seems like Riot is aware of the backlash and is looking for a way to balance rewards without hurting their bottom line.
For the time being, however, if you desire skins, you will need to obtain them the traditional way, by spending money to buy them.
